Römische Dialogverweigerung – hohle Synodalität

Was nun? Ist jetzt in Deutschland der mühsame Synodale Weg zur Aufarbeitung sexualisierter Gewalt und ihrer Vertuschung endgültig gescheitert, wie Reformgegner schon frohlocken? Keine 48 Stunden vor Beginn ihrer Frühjahrsvollversammlung erhielten die deutschen Bischöfe einen drohenden Eilbrief der drei Kardinäle Parolin, Fernández und Prevost aus dem Vatikan. Wenn sie nicht die Abstimmung über die Satzung des Synodalen Ausschusses von der Tagesordnung nehmen würden, hätten sich weitere Gespräche erübrigt. Der Wiener Kardinal Schönborn legte nach: „Die Weigerung einzulenken, wäre obstinatio – klares Anzeichen eines Schismas.“

Der Vatikan hat die deutschen Bischöfe in einen großen Loyalitätskonflikt gebracht. Kirchenrechtlich sind sie Rom zum Gehorsam verpflichtet. Auf der anderen Seite stehen die Bischöfe dem Zentralkomitee der deutschen Katholiken (ZdK), allen Katholikinnen und Katholiken in Deutschland und letztlich auch der deutschen Öffentlichkeit gegenüber im Wort. Denn schließlich waren es die Bischöfe, die nach der Veröffentlichung der deutschen Missbrauchsstudie, der MHG-Studie, in ihrer Ratlosigkeit das ZdK Anfang 2019 um Mithilfe in gleichberechtigter Verantwortung gebeten hatten.

Doch bis heute hat der Vatikan jedes Gespräch mit dem Präsidium des Synodalen Weges, dem auch Nicht-Bischöfe angehören, verweigert. Die vier deutschen Bischöfe aus Eichstätt, Köln, Passau und Regensburg, die dem Synodalen Ausschuss ihre Zustimmung und Finanzierung verweigern, machen es dem Vatikan allerdings auch leicht, nein zu sagen. Für die andauernde Dialogverweigerung Roms trägt auch Erzbischof Eterović eine gehörige Schuld, der als Nuntius nur als vatikanischer Aufpasser und nicht als diplomatischer Vermittler fungiert.

Wahrscheinlich ist es mangelndes Vertrauen und die schlichte Angst vor Machtverlust der Zentrale. Aber Papst Franziskus sagt doch zu Recht über die vatikanischen Behörden, dass sie den Ortskirchen dienen sollen. Es ist schade, dass er als junger Jesuit bei seinem kurzen Studienaufenthalt in Deutschland in den 1980er Jahren mit der deutschen Kultur gefremdelt hat. Vielleicht ist seine Skepsis gegenüber dem Synodalen Weg in Deutschland auch eine unbewusste Abneigung gegenüber der akademischen Theologie seines deutschen Vorgängers Joseph Ratzinger.

In der Kirche wird immer viel von Versöhnung gesprochen. Es braucht dringend klärende Konfliktgespräche zwischen den vatikanischen Behörden und der katholischen Kirche in Deutschland. Der Synodale Weg hierzulande darf kein unrühmliches Ende finden wie der „Dialog für Österreich“, der 1998 eingestampft wurde. Die nächste Sitzung des Synodalen Ausschusses findet im Juni 2024 statt. Bis dahin müssen die Dinge positiv geklärt sein. Das fordert auch das ZdK zu Recht ein. Sonst bleiben alle Worte von Synoldalität hohl.

Roman refusal to engage in dialogue - hollow synodality

What now? Has the arduous Synodal Path of coming to terms with sexualised violence and its cover-up finally failed in Germany, as opponents of reform are already rejoicing? Less than 48 hours before the start of their spring plenary assembly, the German bishops received an urgent letter from Cardinals Parolin, Fernández and Prevost from the Vatican. If they did not take the vote on the statutes of the Synodal Committee off the agenda, further talks would have been superfluous. Cardinal Schönborn from Vienna added: "Refusing to give in would be obstinatio - a clear sign of schism."

The Vatican has placed the German bishops in a major conflict of loyalty. Under canon law, they are obliged to obey Rome. On the other hand, the bishops are answerable to the Central Committee of German Catholics (ZdK), all Catholics in Germany and ultimately also the German public. After all, it was the bishops who, in their helplessness following the publication of the German abuse study, the MHG study, asked the ZdK at the beginning of 2019 for assistance on an equal footing.

However, to date, the Vatican has refused any dialogue with the Presidium of the Synodal Path, which also includes non-bishops. However, the four German bishops from Eichstätt, Cologne, Passau and Regensburg, who refuse to give their approval and funding to the Synodal Committee, also make it easy for the Vatican to say no. Archbishop Eterović, who as nuncio only acts as a Vatican overseer and not as a diplomatic mediator, is also to blame for Rome's ongoing refusal to engage in dialogue.

It is probably due to a lack of trust and the simple fear of losing power at the centre. But Pope Francis is right to say about the Vatican authorities that they should serve the local churches. It is a pity that, as a young Jesuit, he was alienated from German culture during his brief study visit to Germany in the 1980s. Perhaps his scepticism towards the synodal path in Germany is also an unconscious aversion to the academic theology of his German predecessor Joseph Ratzinger.

There is always a lot of talk of reconciliation in the Church. There is an urgent need for clarifying dialogue between the Vatican authorities and the Catholic Church in Germany. The synodal path in this country must not come to an inglorious end like the "Dialogue for Austria", which was scrapped in 1998. The next meeting of the Synodal Committee will take place in June 2024. By then, things must have been positively clarified. The ZdK is also right to demand this. Otherwise all words of synodality will remain hollow.
